CUMULUS Talk WABC-A/NEW YORK has inked GERALDO RIVERA for a daily talk show, reports the NEW YORK TIMES. RIVERA will host the 10a-noon (ET) slot formerly hosted by JOE CRUMMEY, who exited the station last week (NET NEWS 12/9), starting on JANUUARY 3rd. He will continue as a weekend host and correspondent for FOX NEWS CHANNEL.
CUMULUS Co-COO JOHN DICKEY told the TIMES' BRIAN STELTER that RIVERA was hired because "people are interested in hearing a different perspective, a different voice; a more balanced opinion" and that the conpany expected RIVERA to attract a younger demographic and more women to the station. He also indicated that while RIVERA's show was added for NEW YORK, "there certainly is potential to do more."
RIVERA told STELTER that his show would have two slogans: "I'm GERALDO and I'm not always right," and "Not, red, not blue, but red, white and blue."
In a press release issued early MONDAY, RIVERA said, "This is a lifetime dream come true, hosting a talk radio show in the city where everyone has an opinion on everything. I want this show to provide a marketplace for the unpredictable, and also add some much-needed balance on talk radio during this heated election cycle. My slogan is, 'I'm GERALDO and I'm not always right.'"
"When we acquired 77 WABC as part of taking over the CITADEL group of stations this fall we knew that adding a compelling and unique voice to the world of talk radio would be a top priority, and we're quite excited to have the biggest and boldest name in opinion journalism now part of the CUMULUS family," JOHN DICKEY said in the press release.
