A group opposed to media consolidation and decrying the closing of liberal talk stations has declared TODAY (12/12) a day to "Occupy CLEAR CHANNEL." The group, MEDIA ACTION CENTER, along with "Occupy SACRAMENTO" and another local SACRAMENTO group, has called for a national action to send protestors to CLEAR CHANNEL stations to demand to see the stations' public files.
The group's call to action alleges that CLEAR CHANNEL is "abandoning progressive talk in favor of even more right-wing stations on our airwaves -- in anticipation of an election year. We will let them know that eliminating progressive views and further promoting right wing pro-corporate views to the exclusion of any other thought is not acceptable on our public airwaves."
Protestors are being advised to go to their local CLEAR CHANNEL stations and ask to see the public file, then to "start by looking at the letters file. You will (should) find complaints there; see who is complaining and about what, and how the station is reacting to the community. Also, look through the political files; find out who is buying political ads and for how much money. You will be amazed at what you find, and you'll find it enormously empowering. Take notes and tell us what you discover."
A Facebook page for the operation had 57 "likes" as of early MONDAY morning.
