SALEM morning talk host BILL BENNETT is under fire for comments on his show that asserted "I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, you know, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky."
The comments were made by the former Education Secretary in a discussion of the chapter in the bestselling book "FREAKONOMICS" that demonstrated a statistical correlation between abortion and lower crime rates. The comments on WEDNESDAY's show (9/28), taped by liberal group MEDIA MATTERS FOR AMERICA and played on HOWARD STERN's syndicated show THURSDAY (9/29), have drawn condemnation from Senate Democrats and a demand that BENNETT be fired from the LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE ON CIVIL RIGHTS.
