Atlanta -- America’s Urban Market
The top 4 6+ stations in ATLANTA are either Urban or Urban AC. As in past surveys, CBS RADIO Urban WVEE (V103) has a commanding lead with a 9.2 share. While grabbing the #2 slot, RADIO ONE Urban AC WAMJ (MAJIC 107.5) lags WVEE by 2.6 share points. A lead like that is unusual in a top 10 market. LINCOLN FINANCIAL Hot AC WSTR (STAR 94) is the highest ranked non-urban station with a 5.8 share. With CUMULUS Oldies WYAY switching format to News on May 29th, COX RADIO Classis Hits WSRV (97 THE RIVER) continues to climb and delivers a 5.0 share. It will be interesting to see if there is future growth with the announced format change at CBS RADIO AAA WZGC (DAVE-FM).Like its 6+ share, WVEE continues to hold a commanding lead with 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54. A tight 25-54 battle exists between COX RADIO sister stations AC WSB and Classic Hits WSRV.
Washington, D.C. -- Where News Is The Headline
Unusual weather patterns during the JULY survey period enhanced news-driven radio. HUBBARD News WTOP regained the #1 spot with Persons 6+ delivering an 8.9 share, its best performance in 2012. AMERICAN UNIVERSITY and NPR affiliate News/Talk WAMU is second with a 7.7 share. These two stations comprise almost 17 share points in the WASHINGTON market.
As far as the music stations, a strong performance was delivered by HOWARD UNIVERSITY Urban AC WHUR with a 6.7 share. After an explosive JUNE survey, CCE+M Top 40/M WIHT (HOT 995) returns to typical levels with a 6.5 share. A steady rise is seen from CBS RADIO Top 40/R WPGC over the last few months.
While both stations delivered strong 18-34 surveys, WPGC outgained RADIO ONE Urban WKYS (93.9 WKYS) to grab the top spot. However, WIHT still reigns with both 18-49 and 25-54.
Boston -- Format Changes Result In A Tighter Race
While CCM+E Top 40/M WXKS (KISS 108) continues to hold the top 6+ spot in BOSTON, GREATER MEDIA grabs #2, 3, and 4. This includes AC WMJX (MAGIC 106) with a 7.1 share, Country WKLB (COUNTRY 102.5) with a 6.5 share, and Classic Hits WROR. Helped by CBS RADIO WODS changing format from Oldies to Top 40/M in JUNE, WROR’s 6.2 is the station’s best performance in 2012.
WXKS continues to hold the top spot with 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54. However, 25-54 tightens up as WMJX turns in its best 25-54 performance in over a year.
