ALLEN PINKETT's comments about the NOTRE DAME football team needing "a few bad citizens" on the squad have resulted in the former IRISH running back being pulled from his position as radio color commentator for SATURDAY's season opening game in DUBLIN against NAVY. PINKETT told CBS RADIO Sports WSCR-A (670 THE SCORE)/CHICAGO's DAN MCNEIL and MATT SPIEGEL this week that "to have a successful team, you have to have a few bad citizens on the team." PINKETT has issued an apology for the comment, but has been sent home from DUBLIN and will not work the game.
A statement from IMG NOTRE DAME RADIO NETWORK said, "ALLEN PINKETT, a commentator on the IMG NOTRE DAME RADIO NETWORK who made unacceptable comments this week about student athletes, will not be part of this weekend's broadcast in DUBLIN. DON CRIQUI and JEFF JEFFERS will handle the broadcast duties. NOTRE DAME taking on NAVY at the EMERALD ISLE CLASSIC in DUBLIN is an historic game showcasing the very best of American college sports. The event deserves to be free of distraction. Further decisions on this matter will be made in the coming days."
SPIEGEL, writing at the CBS CHICAGO website, said that the hosts "took no joy in hearing a man damage his career and reputation on our air" and had given him several chances to restate the comments without success.
