SAM SNIDERMAN, the founder of the TORONTO-based SAM THE RECORD MAN music retail chain, died SUNDAY (9/23) in TORONTO at 92, reports the TORONTO STAR.
SNIDERMAN's chain encompassed over 130 locations across the country at one point. It started when SNIDERMAN began to sell records from the family radio store in 1937; the "SAM THE RECORD MAN" name became the store's name in the 1950s and the store moved to its longtime flagship location on TORONTO's Yonge Street in 1961. The chain went bankrupt in 2001 and the store closed; SNIDERMAN's sons reopened the store in 2002 and closed it in 2007 with the sale of the flagship location to RYERSON UNIVERSITY. A single SAM store remains, a franchised unit in BELLEVILLE, ON.
