GREATER PLAINS MEDIA Talk WRPW-F(CITIES 92.9)/BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL, IL has made an online splash on YOUTUBE. In an takeoff on reality show "DIRTY JOBS WITH MIKE ROWE," PD ROBERT REES is seen out of his element, going to work for various businesses.
OM JOSH ROBERTS said it started because, "We were brainstorming in a promotions meeting, and I thought it'd be funny if ROBERT had to go work for someone shoveling manure or driving a snow plow. Next thing we know we're talking about selling it and really putting ROBERT to work!"
"ON THE JOB WITH ROBERT REES" was born. It started as a feature where every two weeks REES would spend two hours on the job at an area business. But the sales staff quickly sold out through the summer. The video segments have a two-fold positive effect: helping with the station's bottom line and promoting the local workforce.
The concept is the station promotes the event a week beforehand. REES interviews the business owner on his show the day before. During the event, REES calls the station with updates, while he is taped "on the clock." The next day, a highlight video is posted on the station's YOUTUBE page.
"Oh, I love it!" REES said. "I love getting to know these businesses better and highlighting them in a deeper way than what is traditionally being done in radio up till now."
Here's a typical clip.
