Condolences to family and friends of former longtime WESTINGHOUSE and CBS RADIO News KYW-A/PHILADELPHIA VP/GM ROY SHAPIRO, whose passing was announced by the station TODAY (10/23). He was 76.
SHAPIRO joined GROUP W/WESTINGHOUSE BROADCASTING in 1962 and spent 42 years with the company and its successor CBS RADIO. He served as VP/VM of GROUP W RADIO SALES, VP of Strategic Planning and Research (during which he was on the team that launched WINS-A/NEW YORK and KYW into the All News format), and, most notably, ran KYW for 20 years until his retirement in 2003. He served as a consultant to CBS RADIO until his death.
DAN MASON, Pres./CEO of CBS RADIO, said, "ROY was the backbone of KYW Radio for so many years and continued to make valuable contributions to CBS RADIO through his wealth of knowledge in audience measurement research. All of us at CBS RADIO will miss him - not only as our colleague but as our loyal friend."
EVP/Operations SCOTT HERMAN added, "ROY was an incredible person and one of the brightest and smartest minds the broadcasting industry has ever seen. His legacy will live on through those of us lucky enough to be mentored by him and those of us blessed to be able to call him a friend".
And CBS RADIO PHILADELPHIA SVP/Market Manager MARC RAYFIELD said, "ROY was not only a great boss, he was a father figure to many of us. "He made everyone around him a better broadcaster and a better person. His presence in our daily lives will be sorely missed, but his spirit will live on forever."
