ALL ACCESS has learned that legendary DETROIT Jazz and Blues radio veteran GENE ELZY passed away over the weekend.
GENE ELZY's career spanned 45 years in DETROIT radio including stops at legendary stations WJZZ, WDET, WJR-A, and WCHB AM & FM (now WDMK). He was also the host for several programs on DETROIT PUBLIC TELEVISION's AMERICAN BLACK JOURNAL. He was also a recipient of the DETROIT MUSIC AWARDS "DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD." He was most recently with WDET/DETROIT as the host of "THE GENE ELZY PROGRAM" which aired on SATURDAY nights when he retired in 2006.
GENE ELZY is survived by his wife MILDRED a son MARK, and daughter TRACY. A viewing is scheduled for FRIDAY (12/6) at 5p at the SWANSON FUNERAL HOME, 14751 W. Mc Nichols, DETROIT. The viewing will be followed by funeral services on SATURDAY at ST. PHILIPS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2884 E. Grand Blvd., DETROIT (12/7) at noon.
