The ADELSTEIN-COPPS Media Ownership Road Show continues with FCC Commissioner JONATHAN ADELSTEIN's appearance at the UNIVERSITY OF IOWA'a "Town Meeting on the Future of Radio" WEDNESDAY night (10/5).
ADELSTEIN, an advocate of tougher media ownership restrictions, characterized his own Commission as "a toothless tiger" that hasn't stopped the tide of ownership concentration. ADELSTEIN and fellow Commissioner MICHAEL COPPS have been attending forums on ownership issues in lieu of official FCC open hearings, and ADELSTEIN said that "the best jury is the American people. You can't wait to see what they think if you sit in WASHINGTON and wait for the lobbyists to come tell us what to think."
... the best jury is the American people.
ADELSTEIN repeated his oft-voiced theme that concentration has negatively affected news coverage of local issues; he and COPPS aide JORDAN GOLDSTEIN (COPPS was scheduled to appear but had a family emergency) heard testimony from local residents and broadcasters about media ownership concentration.
