MTV NETWORKS MUSIC & LOGO GROUP Pres. VAN TOFFLER, who started at the company 28 years ago, will leave in APRIL, according to an e-mail sent to this staff yesterday.
VIACOM CEO PHILLIPPE DAUMAN, who approached the exec about a long-term contract after the conclusion of his deal at the end of the year, confirmed the departure.
TOFFLER will continue to serve as Exec. Producer on two of the networks' major properties, the MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS and the CMT AWARDS. Citing a desire to "get back to my love of jumping off cliffs without knowing how/where I might land and making expectation-defining content that boldly breaks through new boundaries," TOFFLER is launching a bi-coastal entertainment company he's given the working title BELOW THE RADAR, "a new platform agnostic content creation and acquisition liger (yes, that stealth hybrid animal from 'Napoleon Dynamite')."
TOFFLER arrived at MTV in 1987 and according to DAUMAN's e--mail, "made many important contributions both on screen and building our most iconic brands ... [with] generation-defining programs like 'Beavis and Butthead,' 'Jersey Shore,' 'Jackass,' 'Teen Wolf,' '16 and Pregnant' and 'The Real World,' as well as films such as 'Election,' 'Hustle and Flow,' 'Blades of Glory' and 'Napoleon Dynamite.'"
Added DAUMAN: "VAN has had a long and brilliant career at VIACOM. I consider him to be not only a great colleague, but also one of the finest people I know."
TOFFER was Pres. of MTV and MTV2 overseeing the launch of the latter and helping guide the acquisition of the COLLEGE TELEVISION NETWORK in 2002, which was relaunched at MTVU. He was appointed Pres. of VIACOM's MUSIC AND LOGO GROUP in 2004, supervising properties including PALLADIA and VH1 CLASSIC.
A restructuring of MTV NETWORKS' executive staff will be announced shortly by DAUMAN.
