WILLIAM (BILL) JOHNSTONE, who has served as Pres./CEO of the OREGON ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS since 1995, has announced his retirement, effective SEPTEMBER 30th.
Commented OAB Chairman KEITH SHIPMAN: “BILL has been a terrific leader and has served the OREGAON ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS well over the past two decades. He has heightened television and radio broadcaster’s visibility among lawmakers at the state and federal level and leaves the organization in a very strong position. His successor will have big shoes to fill.”
JOHNSTONE has directed the day-to-day management of the broadcast trade association for commercial radio and television stations in OREGON for the past 21 years. The membership of the OAB is primarily comprised of commercial broadcasters, and counts many public and non-profit stations among its membership as well as more than 60 Associate members. Approximately 3,600 people are employed in the broadcast industry throughout the state of OREGON.
JOHNSTONE began his career in 1970 in ROSWELL, NM, as an on-air personality at a 50,000-watt NBC affiliate station. Prior to joining the OAB, he held positions as a play-by-play announcer, talk show host, account executive, local, national and general sales manager, and GM for radio and television stations in NEW MEXICO, IDAHO, WASHINGTON and OREGON.
JOHNSTONE told the BOARD: “This has been a fun and successful ride over the years, and I want to thank the broadcasters I’ve met and worked with for their support, camaraderie, friendship and some of the best times I could ever imagine. This isn’t my last rodeo, but it’s going to be fun to throw away the alarm clock for a few months (unless I have an early tee-time) and do some volunteering in my community. I’ve had the pleasure of being the ‘face’ of the OAB for nearly 21 years and while it’s time step down, I have to admit I’m going to miss it.”
JOHNSTONE is a past President of the NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF STATE BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATIONS; and has held numerous positions with local MARCH OF DIMES, RED CROSS and CHAMBER OF COMMERCE in his various home communities throughout his career.
BILL and his wife DANIELLE recently celebrated their 47th anniversary and reside in KING CITY, OR.
A search for his successor will begin immediately.
