STEVE MCCOY has been let go at CUMULUS News-Tall WYAY (NEWS RADIO 106.7)/ATLANTA after he admitted using an old interview he did with DONALD TRUMP as new. A statement from GM SEAN SHANNON said, "For obvious reasons STEVE MCCOY no longer works at the station. CHERYL WHITE, DREW NELSON and RANDY WYLES will continue to provide ATLANTA with a high energy news product that accentuates breaking news as well as in depth coverage on the top stories.”
BUZZFEED reports that MCCOY, who aired the interview on TUESDAY (10/13), initially claimed that the interview took place MONDAY and that not talking about his policies was a precondition for the interview, but TRUMP's campaign attorney HOPE HICKS said that no interview took place MONDAY (calling it a "fraud and/or a spoof") and MCCOY then admitted to BUZZFEED that the interview was "recycled" but denied saying that the interview was new.
BUZZFEED's quotes from the show, however, indicate that MCCOY did indicate on the air "there's DONALD TRUMP from yesterday, our conversation with him," and MCCOY told the site, "I had (an) interview scheduled but it didn’t come through so I used an old interview. I got suspended and I’m taking my punishment."
As the TRUMP interview story broke, the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION's JENNIFER BRETT reported that MCCOY's longtime former on-air partner VIKKI LOCKE said that MCCOY has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and had planned to share that news with listeners before the TRUMP incident.
