Condolences to family and friends of KEN BEATRICE, the longtime WASHINGTON sports radio host who spent over 20 years at WMAL-A and later hosted at WTEM-A (ESPN 980). BEATRICE passed away SATURDAY of complications from pneumonia at a VIRGINIA hospice. He was 72.
BEATRICE, known for telling callers "You're next" in his distinctive BOSTON accent, started his radio career at WESTINGHOUSE News WBZ-A/BOSTON in 1975 as weekend host of "CALLING ALL SPORTS," exiting in 1976 after briefly hosting the weekday edition. He moved to WMAL in 1976 as host of "SPORTS CALL," remaining on the station through 1995 and also hosting the REDSKINS post-game show.
He then hosted a show based at WTEM until his 2000 retirement, after which he became a lector at a VIRGINIA church.
