The long-awaited Season 2 of SERIAL has arrived, with episode 1 of the new season revealing that the new shows will delve into the case of Sgt. BOWE BERGDAHL, the soldier whose disappearance from his Army base in AFGHANISTAN and reappearance in a swap for Taliban detainees touched off a major controversy and claims of desertion and treason.
The new series focuses on BERGDAHL's side of the story, told in interviews with screenwriter MARK BOAL ("THE HURT LOCKER," "ZERO DARK THIRTY"), that he was a whistleblower who inadvertently got captured after leaving the base; critics have alleged that BERGDAHL was instead a deserter. BERGDAHL is presently awaiting a decision on whether he will face a court martial, with prosecutors indicating that they may treat him as being both honest and delusional and recommend that he not serve jail time.
