iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/Rhythmic KHJZ (93.9 JAMZ)/HONOLULU has a new set of call -- KUBT -- and has unveiled a new on-air lineup this week after playing 4,000 songs in a row. SAM THE MAN and HAWAIIAN RYAN bring their morning show to 93-9 THE BEAT from 6-10a. SAM and RYAN join THE BEAT from crosstown Top 40 competitor KDDB (102.7 DA BOMB). It’s a homecoming as SAM and RYAN both started their radio careers at 93.9 back in the 90’s as teenagers when the station was known as I94.
Handling Middays (10a-2p) is former crosstown Top 40 KPHW (POWER 104.3) jock ROMEO VALENTINE. He’s also the new Digital PD for iHEARTMEDIA’s HONOLULU market.
Flying in for Afternoon Drive (2-7p) from sister station Top 40 KYLD (WILD 94.9)/SAN FRANCISCO is RAY STYLES. He grew up in THE BAY AREA and started his career in FRESNO and MERCED before working his way up to SACRAMENTO and eventually to WILD 94.9.
Taking over Nights (7-11p) is JULIAN LEE aka THE NIGHT NINJA. His career has taken him to stations like WBBM (B96)/CHICAGO, KZZP/PHOENIX and KYLD (WILD 94.9)/SAN FRANCISCO. His mom lives in WAIKIKI and he’s stoked that she can once again hear him live on the air in HAWAII.
“Talk about a dream team lineup perfect for HONOLULU,” said SVP/Programming HONOLULU JAMIE HYATT. “I’ve been a fan of SAM & RYAN from afar for years so I’m super excited to finally get the chance to work with these extremely talented guys. The rest of our team on THE BEAT is solid too. ROMEO, RAY and THE NIGHT NINJA are perfect to keep the party going all day and all night on the all-new 93.9 THE BEAT.”
“We’re finally home,” HAWAIIAN RYAN said, “SAM and I started out here 20 years ago. It couldn’t be a better homecoming.”
“These guys are real stars in HONOLULU,” said Market Pres. CHUCK COTTON. “We’re very excited about adding SAM & RYAN to the incredible stable of talent we have here at iHEARTMEDIA/HONOLULU.”
In a related move, KUBT-HD2 (recently KHJZ-HD2) flipped from EDM (EVOLUTION) to Classic Hip Hop as 99.1 JAMZ. The station is the HD side channel of KUBT (93.9 THE BEAT) and simulcasts on the FM Translator (K256AS) at 99.1 FM in HONOLULU. The station features “Ol’ Skool Hip Hop/R&B & Throwbacks from the late 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s.
