OPIE's solo debut in afternoons on SIRIUSXM on TUESDAY (10/4) came with a surprise guest appearance by his former longtime partner ANTHONY CUMIA.
OPIE and ANTHONY had not appeared together on the air for over two years since CUMIA's firing; CUMIA called in from his own subscription video talk show's "Garment District studio" with comic PAUL MECURIO to OPIE, who had comic RICH VOS as an in-studio guest. "The OPIE AND ANTHONY thing is done," CUMIA asserted, but he added that the new afternoon program is a chance to reinvent OPIE's show (although he joked that the "reinvention" is starting with longtime regular guest VOS in the studio).
The conversation included OPIE's resistance to signing a three-year deal, MECURIO's banishment from the show after the infamous "Sex for SAM" incident, CUMIA's stint at a FLORIDA rehab clinic recommended by ARTIE LANGE, ANTHONY's feeling that OPIE didn't go to bat enough for him at the time of his firing ("I gave it a fair shot... they didn't want to hear it," OPIE responded, adding that he thought the show had already begun to come apart before that and needed a break, while ANTHONY thought the show could have continued), whether CUMIA could have saved his job with an appropriate apology (he doesn't think so, OPIE does), and more. The conversation ended with ANTHONY suggesting an off-air get-together and OPIE "leaving it open."
