The CRTC released a report MONDAY (10/25) on broadcast and digital listening and viewing habits of Canadians, showing a marked difference in use of media by consumers in younger demographics.
The 2016 Communications Monitoring Report says that while listening to radio is down 1.8% year-to-year overall to 16.2 hours per week, those in the 12-24 demographic are only listening to 8.2 hours of radio a week. 23% of Canadians are streaming AM/FM radio online, up 1% over 2014, and 20% of Canadians listen to music on online streaming services, up 2%. The report also noted that private commercial radio broadcasters' revenues were mostly flat year-to-year at C$1.6 billion.
CRTC Chairman/CEO JEAN-PIERRE BLAIS said, “This year’s report clearly shows that viewing and listening habits are continuing to shift. Younger Canadians are the ones who consume the least amount of audio-visual content using traditional ways. Online platforms are increasingly attractive and accessible to Canadians. The broadcasting industry must ensure that it meets the changing needs of Canadians, who increasingly want to watch and listen to content on the platform of their choice.”
