NPR is looking at a revenue surplus for the second year in a row, reports CURRENT.ORG, citing a presentation by CFO DEBBIE COWAN on preliminary Fiscal Year 2016 numbers last week to the NPR Board of Directors' Finance Committee.
COWAN told the committee that the network's sponsorship sales were up 16% to $60 million; the numbers, said NATIONAL PUBLIC MEDIA CEO GINA GARRUBBO, rose for both broadcast and digital, with the latter driven by podcast income, which saw renewals at an "extremely high" rate and some success in getting podcast sponsors to buy broadcast underwriting as well. GARRUBBO added that NPM is targeting tech, financial, and B-to-B clients for more sponsorships.
Not all the news was good, as COWAN noted a 4% drop in development income, although she cited some success in reaching funding commitments that will cover multiple years in the future.
