CRAIG SAGER, the longtime sportscaster and NBA sideline reporter for TURNER SPORTS, has died after a long battle with leukemia. SAGER, known for his colorful suits and respected for his knowledge of sports, was 65.
SAGER started in sportscasting at ABC affiliate WXLT-TV (now WWSB-TV)/SARASOTA in 1972, and also worked in radio there for WSPB-A. He then went to WTSP-TV/ST. PETERSBURG, WINK-TV/FORT MYERS, and KMBC-TV/KANSAS CITY, joining TURNER in 1981 as co-anchor of CNN's "SPORTS TONIGHT." He covered several sports for CNN, TBS, and TNT, reporting and anchoring on MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, NFL and college football, and the NBA.
His widely publicized illness, first diagnosed in 2014 and which, after a brief remission, returned in 2015, led TNT rival ESPN to bring SAGER on to work as a sideline reporter for last season's NBA Finals. ESPN also honored SAGER with its JIMMY V Perseverance Award at the 2016 ESPYs.
