Longtime WINDY CITY radio personality ROBERT MURPHY will sign off as afternoon host at CUMULUS MEDIA Classic Hits WLS/CHICAGO, with his last show on DECEMBER 30th, reports ROBERT FEDER.
His replacement has not been announced.
CUMULUS MEDIA VP/Classic Hits and WLS PD BRIAN THOMAS said, "Thanks to ROBERT for his three years of service and for being a total pro during this transition."
MURPHY said, “I’ll mark my stay at 94.7 WLS as one of my better radio experiences — and I’ve had many experiences. I was proud to be a part of the heritage call letters, and really honored to be working with legends such as DICK BIONDI and JOHN LANDEICKER, along with all the other great talent associated with the station. It’s been a real slice.”
The 65-year-old veteran said he was notified last month that his contract would not be renewed.
The BIRMINGHAM, AL, native first joined WKQX/CHICAGO in 1983, where he anchored the Adult Contemporary station's morning show for 10 years. His photo in a straitjacket became the linchpin of a memorable local ad campaign.
MURPHY's stint in the afternoon at WLS was the first time he’d held a shift outside of morning drive. It actually marked his second tour of duty at the station. In 1994, he helped launch a “young talk” format as WLS morning host for the then-CAPITAL CITIES/ABC-owned station before pulling the plug and switching to a full-time simulcast with news/talk WLS (AM 890).
