This SATURDAY, APRIL 22nd, local music retailers around the country will celebrate the 10th anniversary of RECORD STORE DAY (RSD) with a full list of special releases which can be viewed here.
NIELSEN MUSIC has been tracing the phenomenon -- particularly the spectacular rebirth of the vinyl LP, reflecting a "clear consumer enthusiasm for independent retailers and vinyl."
First launched in 2008, RSD has achieved holiday status among audiophiles and everyday music fans alike; its astonishing success over the last decade has seen industry-wide physical sales enjoy consistent year-over-year growth on the day of RSD’s observance.
• In the last three years, sales of all physical formats at INDIE RETAIL have surged on RSD with a 91% growth in 2014, 47% in 2015, and 130% in 2016.
• Vinyl LP sales at INDIE RETAILERS have seen an average increase of 186% on RSD, since its inaugural year in 2008. Last year, Vinyl LP sales spiked 321% at INDIE RETAILERS on RSD.
• Vinyl LP sales have accounted for nearly 80% of the total sales at INDIE RETAIL on RSD, going back to 2008.
• Total annual sales for vinyl LPs at indie retail have grown considerably in the last 10 years, jumping from just 737,000 units in 2007 to 5,432,000 in 2016. That’s a 637% increase in vinyl LP sales since 2007. Meanwhile, annual indie retailer sales of all physical formats have experienced an overall decline of 48% during the same time period.
The resurgent popularity of vinyl LPs over the last 10 years has not gone unnoticed by chain retailers. Seeking to snag a piece of the vinyl pie, total industry sales have skyrocketed from just 990,000 units in 2007 to more than 13 million in 2016 … a 1,225% increase in vinyl LP sales over the last decade.
• While the share of RSD vinyl LP sales remains high for indie retailers (74% in 2016), they’ve seen their share of annual vinyl LP sales decline from a dominant 74.4% in 2007 to 41.4% in 2016.
• Meanwhile, vinyl LP’s total industry share of all physical sales has increased from a mere 0.2% in 2007 to a healthy 11.1% in 2016.
Clearly, other retailers have responded to the vinyl trend and are increasing their efforts to supply consumer demand on a day-to-day basis.
It’s for this reason that many indie retailers have made RECORD STORE DAY a true celebration and are enticing customers with an array of treats such as breakfast, beer, candy, face painting, raffles and of course, live performances.
