APPLE's WWDC announcement of an update to its iOS Podcasts app included the revelation that the new version will offer podcast producers access to a set of basic analytics, which will include information on what parts of episodes the listeners actually listen to and which parts they skip, as well as when episodes are listened to. The new analytics, to be launched with the arrival of iOS 11 this FALL, will not be traceable to individual users.
The updated app will also add extensions to the feed format for shows to allow producers to define episodes as regular episodes, bonus episodes, or teasers, and will allow seasons to be defined as well, giving listeners the option to download full seasons at a time while producers can specify how the seasons should be listened to, e.g. in chronological order or most recent episode first.
Goldstein On Apple Analytics: A Wake-Up Call For Podcasters
AMPLIFI MEDIA consultant and ALL ACCESS columnist STEVE GOLDSTEIN has thoughts on the APPLE announcement, noting that the release of data by APPLE was previously thought to be "impossible" and "will likely result in change for many podcasters by revealing real listening behavior. They will finally see what listeners like, and conversely, dislike and creators will be able to fine-tune the content accordingly.... APPLE's new analytics are likely to be a wake-up call for many producers and possibly a reset in the advertising community, answering questions about whether ads are heard or skipped, when shows are stopped and a much needed resolution for many podcasters as to how long their podcast should be."
