BOB MURPHY, the longtime radio voice of STANFORD UNIVERSITY sports, has passed away at the age of 86 after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.
"MURPH," a STANFORD graduate who pitched for the school's College World Series contender in 1953, called STANFORD sports from 1964 through 2007, punctuated by a stint as Athletics Director at SAN JOSE STATE in 1976-79. He also served as the school's Sports Information Director in 1964-72 and was credited with the 1970 publicity campaign that led to a Heisman Award for quarterback JIM PLUNKETT in 1970. His most famous call was at the 1998 NCAA men's basketball MIDWEST Regional final, during the CARDINAL's comeback against RHODE ISLAND, when he announced MARK MADSEN's dunk with the memorable phrase "and... he... was.. fouled!"
MURPHY retired as football analyst and men's basketball play-by-play announcer in 2007.
