The NAB is increasing the pressure on APPLE to activate FM chips in iPhones despite the electronics giant's insistence that there are no FM chips to be activated in the devices, with NAB CTO SAM MATHENY posting a piece on the organization's Policy Blog charging that APPLE has the chips and has disabled them.
MATHENY's "BLUF – Bottom Line Up Front" in the post notes that APPLE included FM in its iPOD NANO but "has specifically chosen not to offer this functionality in their iPHONE. Indeed, APPLE has disabled FM chips despite the capability being available on the communications module within the iPHONE." MATHENY points to tear-down studies of the iPHONE that claim the iPHONE chips support WiFi, Bluetooth, and FM radio, and says APPLE "purposefully does not connect the antenna" to enable the FM tuner to work.
"NAB welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with APPLE, even though APPLE doesn’t need our help from an engineering perspective," MATHENY concludes. "APPLE’s iPhone is a phenomenal device and does so many things well. We hope they recognize that activating the FM capability would make it even better for all of their customers around the world."
