If you use or depend on AOL's longtime messaging program, AIM, to communicate with friends or colleagues on the internet, today (12/15) marks the day you're searching for a new option. AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) was shut down a few hours ago.
WIKIPEDIA describes AIM as, "an instant messaging and presence computer program created by AOL, which used the proprietary OSCAR instant messaging protocol and the TOC protocol to allow registered users to communicate in real time." The company posted this to say goodbye:
