A KING COUNTY Superior Court Commissioner has ruled that PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, the former licensee of noncommercial News-Talk-Jazz KPLU/TACOMA-SEATTLE (now FRIENDS OF 88.5 FM Jazz KNKX), is not entitled to receive bequests left in wills by listeners who intended the money to go to the station, not the university.
The TACOMA NEWS TRIBUNE reports that three known bequests are for $8,000, $12,000, and over $100,000, and Court Commissioner HENRY JUDSON ruled on THURSDAY (1/18) that FRIENDS OF 88.5 FM, not the university, should get the money and any others that turn up that are earmarked for "KPLU."A spokesperson for PACIFIC LUTHERAN told the paper that it will ask a Superior Court judge to review the decision. PLU sold the station to FRIENDS OF 88.5 FM after the latter raised enough money to match a bid by the UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON and prevent the station from being placed into the operation of News-Talk KUOW/SEATTLE.
