Another media company is bailing at least in part from the podcast space, as THE WALL STREET JOURNAL is reporting that BUZZFEED is cutting its podcast production team and shutting most of its podcasts down, pivoting further to video. The company, the JOURNAL reports, will continue to produce some podcasts but without an in-house team.
The move, BUZZFEED NEWS VP/News and Programming SHANI HILTON said in an e-mail to staff, is part of a "move to a production model that is more like our TV projects," namely treating each show as an individual project rather than having a team to create multiple shows. Among the podcasts facing the ax are "SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING," "THE NEWS," and "REPORTING TO YOU." Some other shows, like "ANOTHER ROUND," "NO ONE KNOWS ANYTHING," "NEWS FEED," "THE TELL SHOW," "RERUN," and LENA DUNHAM's limited-run "WOMEN OF THE HOUR," previously fell by the wayside.
BUZZFEED's podcast cuts follow PANOPLY MEDIA's shutdown of its podcast network last week in a shift towards concentrating on its MEGAPHONE podcast dynamic ad insertion technology.
An earlier version of this item listed “THIRST AID KIT” as among the shows being dropped; BUZZFEED NEWS informs us that the show will remain on the roster. We regret the error.
