WXXI PUBLIC BROADCASTING COUNCIL, licensee of News-Talk WXXI-A (AM 1370 - NPR NEWS & TALK), Classical WXXI-F (CLASSICAL 91.5), and PBS affiliate WXXI-TV/ROCHESTER, NY, has signed a letter of intent to acquire the alternative newsweekly CITY NEWSPAPER from founders and co-publishers MARY ANNA and BILL TOWLER for an undisclosed price. WXXI said that the TOWLERS approached the stations about a deal to preserve the papers beyond their retirement. CITY and its website will remain for-profit, operated as a subsidiary of the non-profit parent WXXI, and the editorial voices will remain separate.
"We believe the need for this newspaper has never been stronger, and it is our goal to ensure its publication continues for decades to come,” said MARY ANNA TOWLER. “We have been members of WXXI for many years and know that together, it will be greater than the sum of two organizations.”
“We recognize the value of CITY NEWSPAPER to ROCHESTER, and are excited to have the opportunity to ensure its long-term success in our community,” said WXXI President NORM SILVERSTEIN. “This helps WXXI to better serve our community through enhanced coverage of arts and culture, education, neighborhoods, and events. It’s an example of what a modern media organization should be.”
