British TALKRADIO host IAIN LEE helped rescue a man who called into his show claiming he had taken a drug overdose and was “lying in the street, dying," the WEEKLY STANDARD reports. It started when a man who identified himself CHRIS called TALKRADIO and claimed that he had “taken an overdose to kill me” about an hour earlier in Plymouth.
LEE kept the caller talking for half-hour and managed to get him to describe his location and what he was wearing. Producer KATH called Emergency services to reach the caller.
In the meantime, the radio host asked the caller, “Do you want to die?” To which he replied, “I really want to discuss it with you.” That was followed by "long periods of silence” when LEE thought the caller had died.
“CHRIS, I love you brother," he said. "You deserve better than this, right? Whatever has happened I promise you it can be sorted. I guarantee that whatever has happened it can be sorted out. It might not be easy, it might be painful, but it’s better than you doing this.”
A spokesman for DEVON and CORNWALL POLICE said that officers met with the caller and took him to DERRIFORD HOSPITAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT for further treatment.
“Tonight we took a call from a man who had taken an overdose," LEE tweeted afterward. "He was lying in a street in PLYMOUTH, dying. We managed to keep him online, get a description of what he looked like and was wearing, work out where he was and send an ambulance and police to him. Kept him on the phone for 30 minutes while he got harder to understand. Long periods of silence where I thought he had died. F***, that was intense and upsetting. I really hope he makes it.
