Unsurprisingly, state broadcasters associations are on board with the revived PIRATE Act -- the Preventing Illegal Radio Abuse Through Enforcement (PIRATE) Act (H.R. 583) -- and have written a joint letter to Congressional and Senate leaders urging the bill's passage.
The letter from 50 state broadcasters associations plus those in the DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA and PUERTO RICO to Speaker of the House NANCY PELOSI (D-CA), Senate Majority Leader MITCH MCCONNELL (R-KY), House Minority Leader KEVIN MCCARTHY (R-CA), and Senate Minority Leader CHUCK SCHUMER (D-NY), call on legislators to pass the recently re-introduced bill, which would amp up enforcement of anti-unlicensed operator laws and increase fines to up to $100,000 per violation and $2 million maximum.
"We are reaching the point where illegal pirate stations undermine the legitimacy and purpose of the FCC’s licensing system to the detriment of listeners in communities across the country," the letter says. "The PIRATE Act will help the FCC restore integrity to the system."
