Longtime BIRMINGHAM sportscaster HERB WINCHES says he told his bosses he refused to play on the "B" team and has left the sports-talk radio station he helped launch nearly 15 years ago.
WINCHES said that CITADEL Sports WJOX, his former station, is looking to lure the popular and controversial PAUL FINEBAUM away from rival WERC to be his replacement.
Last month, CITADEL began simulcasting WJOX, a longtime AM station, on an FM signal, too. In JANUARY, though, the company plans to stop simulcasting WJOX and launch a second sports-talk station on the 690 AM frequency while WJOX will remain on its new 100.5 FM signal.
"I wasn't going to let them slide me into a slot that I think is going to die," WINCHES said. "If you had a chance to listen to sports talk on AM or FM, where would you find yourself going more often than not? The quality is better (on FM)."
