TODAY (8/6) ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE broke its long-rumored article that alleged label pay for play (quid pro quo) to radio is back and fairly widespread.
Two of the biggest radio companies, iHEARTMEDIA and CUMULUS, both noted their policies of refusing to work with independent promoters or engage in such activities.
While few people went on the record in this article, it reminded many industry veterans of then-NEW YORK Attorney General ELIOT SPITZER's investigation into payola, which began in late 2004 and ended in mid-2006 with major labels all signing consent decrees and creating compliance departments to guard against such practices.
