ALL ACCESS has confirmed that FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM and WHATSAPP are all back up and online after most of the day being dark. ...so you can go back to what you were doing. Sources confirmed INSTAGRAM’s platform flashed up a “couldn’t load posts” message when trying to access people’s pages, while FACEBOOK’s newsfeed simply refused to load. GIZMODO reported that WHATSAPP has been experiencing outages in the U.S, and abroad, with users in RUSSIA, BARCELONA and TRINIDAD all reporting that their access has been shut off.
FACEBOOK itself has not confirmed the root cause of the blackout, but the INTERNET weighed in. The company’s apps went down when its DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM records became unreachable. DNS is often referred to as the internet’s phone book; it’s what translates the host names you type into a URL tab — like facebook.com — into IP addresses, which is where those sites live.
FACEBOOK spokesperson ANDY STONE acknowledged the outages in a tweet, saying, “We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
The company later sent out the following message: "To the large community of people and businesses around the world who depend on us, we're sorry. We've been working hard to restore access to our apps and services and are happy to report they are coming back online now. Thank you for bearing with us."
According to DOWNDETECTOR.COM, FACEBOOK was down for more than 83,000 users as of 11:47a (ET). At the same time, over 66,000 INSTAGRAM users reported outages as well as over 22,000 WHATSAPP users.
The outage impacted users on both desktop and mobile.
