Congratulations to BIG MACHINE RECORDS’ CARLY PEARCE and WARNER MUSIC NASHVILLE/WAR’s ASHLEY McBRYDE and their respective promotion teams. The two rising Country stars top the MEDIABASE Country chart this week with their duet, “Never Wanted To Be That Girl.” The ballad impacted radio last SEPTEMBER, where it debuted as the most added song of the week with 74 stations on board. It now summits after 34 weeks on the chart.
The cheating song, told from the perspective of two disillusioned women, was penned by its two singers, alongside co-producer SHANE McANALLY.
“When we were writing, we were just in the moment, thinking about the women we want to be and the way that’s not always how life and love turn out,” said PEARCE. “But nobody ever paused long enough to think about having a #1 record or winning an ACM Award for spilling our secrets and learning from honest mistakes. But now, here we are, and it feels really great.”
“We’ve heard so many stories from men and women — all ages — who’ve been in this position, realized what was happening and got the heck out,” added McBRYDE. “That’s a big part of why this probably went to #1; so many people unfortunately know this feeling all too well.”
