Grammy Awards Premiere: Favorites Brandi, Beyonce Take Home Multiple Awards, Viola Davis Earns EGOT

The 65th GRAMMY AWARDS PREMIERE CEREMONY, which honors most of the 91 nominees not announced during the CBS telecast, took place this morning at the MICROSOFT THEATER in LOS ANGELES.
BEYONCE was among the first batch of winners, taking home BEST ELECTRONIC/DANCE RECORDING for "Break My Soul," as well as BEST TRADITIONAL R&B PERFORMANCE for "PLASTIC OFF THE SOFA," two of the nine categories in which she has been nominated. She lost to MUNI LONG, the upset winner for "Hrs & Hrs," in the BEST R&B PERFORMANCE category. TAYLOR SWIFT won one during the pre-telecast for BEST MUSIC VIDEO for her self-directed, 10-minute "All Too Well: 10-Minute Version The Short Film."
Eight-time nominee KENDRICK LAMAR was the winner in BEST RAP PERFORMANCE for "The Heart Part Five" and BEST RAP SONG for the same track. BRANDI CARLILE showed up with her band to accept BEST ROCK PERFORMANCE and BEST ROCK SONG for "Broken Horses." "I just won a GRAMMY for writing a rock 'n' roll song," she gushed from the stage, before landing one more in the BEST AMERICANA ALBUM category for "In These Silent Days," giving her three going into the telecast.
BEST NEW ARTIST nominee SAMARA JOY was presented with BEST JAZZ VOCAL ALBUM for "Linger Awhile." VIOLA DAVIS showed up to pick up her BEST AUDIOBOOK for "Finding Me," giving her a GRAMMY to go along with her EMMY, OSCAR and TONY, and making her a coveted EGOT winner.
Just after announcing he would be retiring from touring, OZZY OSBOURNE won a pair of GRAMMYS for BEST METAL PERFORMANCE and BEST ROCK ALBUM.
BEST NEW ARTIST nominees WET LEG turned up to accept two GRAMMYs for BEST ALTERNATIVE MUSIC PERFORMANCE for "Chaise Longue" and BEST ALTERNATIVE MUSIC ALBUM for their self-titled debut.
LATIN star ROSALIA grabbed BEST LATIN ROCK OR ALTERNATIVE ALBUM for her critically acclaimed, "Motomami" album.
EDGAR WINTER praised the ACADEMY for "skintone diversity," accepting his GRAMMY for a tribute to brother JOHNNY, for BEST CONTEMPORARY BLUES ALBUM, while longtime RECORDING ACADEMY fave BONNIE RAITT earned her two awards for BEST AMERICANA PERFORMANCE and BEST AMERICANA ROOTS SONG, showing up to accept in person. "I'm so proud for how long I've been doing this," she said, thanking the AMERICANA category for giving artists like her "a home."
Gospel star KIRK FRANKLIN was the pre-show's big winner with four GRAMMYs for his collaboration with MAVERICK CITY MUSIC, "One Deluxe."
TOBIAS JESSO JR. won the first-ever SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR, Non-Classical honors, sharing it with the "songwriting community," while JACK ANTONOFF earned PRODUCER OF THE YEAR, Non-Classical.
Said RECORDING ACADEMY CEO HARVEY MASON, JR., "Not only do we have an incredible lineup of presenters and performers, but this ceremony will also reveal the winners in the vast majority of our categories, celebrating this amazing year in music across many of our genre communities. Music is a miracle that brings us all together."
By our calculation, aside from the Big Four categories, the following will be awarded on-air tonight: BEST POP SOLO PERFORMANCE, BEST POP DUO/GROUP PERFORMANCE, BEST POP VOCAL ALBUM, BEST DANCE/ELECTRONIC MUSIC ALBUM, BEST R&B SONG, BEST RAP ALBUM and BEST COUNTRY ALBUM.
The event was hosted by GRAMMY nominee for Best Comedy Album RANDY RAINBOW and featured an opening number by nominees BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA (Best Americana Performance), LA MARISOUL from LA SANTA CECILIA (Best Tropical Latin Album), Gospel star MARANDA CURTIS (Best Gospel Album) and musical theater stalwart SHOSHANA BEAN (Best Musical Theater Album) with Blues guitarist BUDDY GUY (Best Traditional Blues Album) and BOB MINTZER (Best Instrumental Jazz Album), performing an uplifting version of RARE EARTH's "I Just Want to Celebrate."Other artists who gave live performances included nominees AROOJ AFTAB (Best Global Music Performance), MADISON CUNNINGHAM (Best American Roots Performance), SAMARA JOY (Best New Artist, Best Jazz Vocal Album), ANOUSHKA SHANKAR (Best Global Music Performance,Best Global Music Album) and CARLOS VIVES (Best Tropical Latin Album).
Presenting the GRAMMY Awards during the PREMIERE ceremony were nominees JUDY COLLINS (Best Folk Album), BABYFACE (Best Traditional R&B Performance), DOMI & JD BECK (Best New Artist, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album), TONY AWARD winner MYLES FROST (Best Musical Theater Album), ARTURO O'FARRILL (Best Latin Jazz Album), MALCOLM JAMAL-WARNER (Best Spoken Word Poetry Album), AMANDA GORMAN (Best Spoken World Poetry) and five-time GRAMMY winner and former RECORDING ACADEMY Board Of Trustees Chair JIMMY JAM. RECORDING ACADEMY Chair Of The Board Of Trustees TAMMY HURT provided opening remarks.
