Four Podcasts Among 2023 duPont-Columbia Award Winners

Four podcasts were among the winners of 2023 ALFRED I. DUPONT-COLUMBIA AWARDS for journalism. The audio winners were AUDIBLE for the true crime series "FINDING TAMIKA"; THIS AMERICAN LIFE for the "Talking While Black" episode; the WASHINGTON POST's "POST REPORTS" podcast for "A Post-ROE AMERICA: Continuing Coverage of Abortion"; and SPOTIFY's GIMLET MEDIA for "STOLEN: SURVIVING ST. MICHAEL'S," an exposé of CANADA's residential school system and its history of abuse. CNN and PBS led all winners with two apiece; the 16 winners, announced MONDAY (2/6), were chosen from 30 finalists.
CNN's wins were for CNN WORLDWIDE's UKRAINE coverage and CNN FILMS/HBO MAX's documentary "NAVALNY"; PBS won with WGBH-TV/BOSTON for the "NOVA" episode "ARCTIC Sinkholes" and for "PBS NEWSHOUR" and JANE FERGUSON's coverage of AFGHANISTAN and UKRAINE. HBO's documentary unit was honored for "THE JANES," a documentary about an underground network to help women obtain abortions in the pre-ROE era.
The other winners included CBS NEWS for a "60 MINUTES" report on "National Security in the Information Age;" TEGNA NBC affiliate KARE-TV/MINNEAPOLIS and reporters A.J. LAGOE and BRANDON STAHL for "THE GAP: FAILURE TO TREAT, FAILURE TO PROTECT," a series of reports on failures in MINNESOTA's judicial and health care systems; TEGNA NBC affiliate WXIA-TV (11 ALIVE)/ATLANTA and reporter REBECCA LINDSTROM for "#Keeping," reports on flaws in GEORGIA's system that lead to parents turning their children over to state custody ; ABC NEWS STUDIOS and HULU for "LEAVE NO TRACE: A HIDDEN HISTORY OF THE BOY SCOUTS"; MANSHIP ABC affiliate WBRZ-TV/BATON ROUGE and reporter CHRIS NAKAMOTO for "MURDER – LIES – HIDDEN EVIDENCE: HOLDING LOUISIANA STATE POLICE ACCOUNTABLE," reporting on the death of an unarmed Black man in police custody; SCRIPPS CBS affiliate WTVF-TV (NEWSCHANNEL 5)/NASHVILLE and reporter PHIL WILLIAMS for "NEWSCHANNEL 5 INVESTIGATES: Revealed," examining the outsized power and influence of lobbyists and special interests on TENNESSEE's legislature; and NBC O&O KXAS-TV (NBC 5)/FORT WORTH-DALLAS and reporter SCOTT FRIEDMAN for "Paper Tag Nation," exposing how criminals can obtain TEXAS car dealer licenses and sell fake license plates often used in crimes.
