SILICONVALLEY.COM reports that several in-the-know blogs are predicting that GOOGLE could spring a Labor Day surprise -- the web search giant is developing mobile software around a Linux-based operating system. ENDGADGET.COM reported that "From what we've heard, GOOGLE isn't necessarily working on hardware of its own but is definitely working ... to put the gPHONE OS on upcoming devices."
Predictably, Google wouldn't comment on the recent rumors. However, GOOGLE CEO ERICK SCHMIDT told a group of reporters at the company's headquarters last MAY that Google was indeed developing all kinds of mobile phone software. "We are working to make the mobile stack more powerful through a lot of initiatives," he said. "We have a lot of software that is getting added to phones and platforms."
