WISCONSIN Attorney General J.B. VAN HOLLEN joined the list of those opposed to the XM-SIRIUS merger on TUESDAY, sending a letter to Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust THOMAS O. BARNETT calling the merger a monopoly.
VAN HOLLEN wrote, "The proposed merger would eliminate competition in the satellite radio industry and the combined SIRIUS companies would be free to raise prices, stifle innovation and reduce program diversity." He asked the JUSTICE DEPARTMENT to "block the merger, as it presents a real threat to competition and is a clear violation of the CLAYTON ACT’s prohibition on merger-to-monopoly."
Radio Shack: Yes To Merger
Meanwhile, RADIO SHACK joined the list of supporters of the satellite merger. The chain's announcement follows similar supportive letters from CIRCUIT CITY and CRUTCHFIELD.
