CLEAR CHANNEL Country KVET/AUSTIN morning personality SAM ALLRED, is off the air. Sources at the cluster told KXAN that ALLRED is no longer employed at KVET. ALLRED told KXAN he's still getting paid, but he will not be on the air TODAY. A quick check of KVET's web site confirms his bio page has been removed from the public site. He is also listed as "former" staff on WIKIPEDIA. ALL ACCESS sources in AUSTIN say ALLRED called a listener an "a**hole" on the air.
Seventy-three year old ALLRED has been a DJ since the 1960's, hosting the SAM AND BOB show with BOB COLE for the past several years. An internal company memo did not offer any reason for ending his relationship with CLEAR CHANNEL. Musician RAY BENSON, The Voice of KVET, says ALLRED helped make "AUSTIN Weird" and special.
"A lot of people will be happy, a lot will be sad. He was controversial. Who knows what went on. He's one of the real unique radio personalities. CACTUS PRYOR, SAMMY ALLRED... They are the only two left from the old AUSTIN. I'm sure he'll land somewhere if wants to," BENSON said.
The station manager is reportedly preparing a statement regarding this separation and it is expected to be released on TODAY. ALLRED was suspended from duties earlier this year (NET NEWS 3/5) for a racial slur used in referring to presidential candidate BARACK OBAMA.
