The FEDERAL ELECTIONS COMMISSION has approved the use of "issue ads" on radio and TV in the days leading up to elections, loosening the rules which have restricted such ads for the last five years.
The decision follows a JUNE SUPREME COURT ruling finding the ban on issue ads 30 days or less before an election unconstitutional. The ads by PACs and candidate committees will be permitted as long as no election, party, or candidate is mentioned and the ad focuses on a public policy issue. Spots calling for the election or defeat of a candidate will remain banned.
