On the heels of the announcement that DENNIS FITZSIMONS will step down as Chairman/CEO of the TRIBUNE COMPANY on DEC 31st, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL reports that renown radio icon RANDY MICHAELS will join the newspaper and TV company once SAM ZELL's buyout of the media group closes in the next few days.
ZELL, who will assume the Chairman post once the TRIBUNE deal closes, worked with MICHAELS when he acquired JACOR in the early 1990s. During that time, he promoted MICHAELS to be Pres./CEO. ZELL eventually sold JACOR to CLEAR CHANNEL; MICHAELS stayed on as head of CCR until he exited in 2002.
What MICHAELS will do at TRIBUNE has yet to be divulged. Radio-wise, TRIBUNE only owns heritage Talk WGN-A/CHICAGO, but MICHAELS has been buying small-market stations, as well as TV properties, on his own in the past few years.
