Cascade Classic Rock KISM/BELLINGHAM, WA announcer LAURIE MICHAELS has many friends, and some of them now have the bald heads to prove it, reports THE SEATTLE TIMES.
Dozens of people shaved their heads THURSDAY AFTERNOON in a fundraiser and show of support for MICHAELS, who was in her last trimester of pregnancy when she learned she had a brain aneurysm earlier this month. She has had two brain surgeries at HARBORVIEW MEDICAL CENTER in SEATTLE, and her daughter was born last week by Caesarean section.
While MICHAELS recovers from her ordeal, her friends and co-workers have been raising money to help with her medical expenses. A listener called in to suggest that MICHAELS' on-air co-host, BRAD CASH, shave his head to show his support for MICHAELS, who had to shave hers. Perhaps MICHAELS' 8-year-old son, TOMMY TEEHAN, could do the honors, another listener suggested, since he helped shave his mom's head to prepare her for surgery.
By THURSDAY afternoon, when SHEARER'S HAIR DESIGN was offering to shave heads and donate all the proceeds to the LAURIE MICHAELS Fund at INDUSTRIAL CREDIT UNION, at least 27 people had decided they could live without their hair if it would help MICHAELS.
KISM broadcast the event live from the parking lot in front of the salon. Counting donations and the sale of pizza, kettle corn and haircuts, the event raised about $1,350.
