UPS is supposed to stand for "uninterruptible power supply," but INFINITY News WINS-A/NEW YORK discovered that "uninterruptible" doesn't mean it won't do the interrupting, and as a result, the station went silent at 5:29a FRIDAY morning for about 10 minutes.
The NEW YORK POST's JOHN MAINELLI reports that the computer that runs the UPS locked up and took down the power for the newsroom and studios, and blocked the power from the station's gas-powered generator to get through as well. Exec. Editor MARK MASON sent staffers bolting a few blocks to the studios of sister News WCBS-A to get back on the air, and WINS vamped with CNN audio for 40 minutes until the staffers could get back on from WCBS' facility for about 20 minutes. All was fixed and back to normal by 6:42 am.
