Broadcast journalists will now be allowed to join CANADIAN BROADCAST STANDARDS COUNCIL panels overseeing adjudication of complaints against radio and TV stations. The CRTC approved the change TODAY, amending the Journalistic Independence Code to allow employees of private broadcasters to comprise half of participants on the CBSC panels to add "journalistic expertise and perspective" to be included when the panels review public complaints.
The CBSC is a non-governmental board that reviews complaints about indecency and fairness on radio and television, serving as an arbiter and issuing rulings with voluntary penalties involving publicizing violations of the code.
