Former Secretary of State COLIN POWELL took a shot at RUSH LIMBAUGH in a CNN interview set to air SUNDAY, saying that the Republican Party needs to "stop shouting at the world and at the country. I think that the party has to take a hard look at itself, and I've talked to a number of leaders in recent weeks and they understand that... Can we continue to listen to RUSH LIMBAUGH? Is this really the kind of party that we want to be when these kinds of spokespersons seem to appeal to our lesser instincts rather than our better instincts?"
POWELL, a Republican who crossed party lines to endorse BARACK OBAMA for President this year, made the comments in an interview with CNN's FAREED ZAKARIA.
The interview has already created a reaction among conservative commentators and bloggers, including NATIONAL REVIEW's KEVIN D. WILLIAMSON, who wrote, "POWELL, for all of his merits, has never been a conservative, never been particularly comfortable with conservatives, and lately has been actively hostile toward conservatives. If the Republican party isn't the conservative party, it isn't anything.... I suspect that even most Democrats would agree that if the Republican party had communicators half as effective as LIMBAUGH running for office, they'd never lose an election."
