RADIOCRUNCH/MUSICRUNCH partners ANTHONY ACAMPORA and KEVIN MCCABE take us for a look inside the NOVEMBER PPM results from ARBITRON for the top three markets: NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, and CHICAGO. NOVEMBER was pretty active on the news front with the presidential election and a failing economy giving News and Talk stations a lot to cover and talk about.
New York: Z100 Claims Clean Sweep; WSKQ Up; WINS Stays Hot
CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WHTZ (Z100) remains atop the BIG APPLE ratings -- scoring the top position among adults 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54 in NOVEMBER. SBS continues to see growth for Tropical WSKQ - which now finds itself ranked 2nd with adults 18-49 and 25-54. CBS News WINS-A started to see growth in OCTOBER when the financial crisis began and held strong again in NOVEMBER.
25-54: Z100 retains the top position and saw its lead widen over sister AC WLTW, which slipped nearly a half share from OCTOBER and is now tied with WSKQ for #2. WINS rises from 5th to 4th, and is up 56% in share since August. CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Rock WAXQ has been in a steady decline since August, dropping from a tie for #1 with Z100 to 5th place in NOVEMBER. CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic WKTU holds in 6th place, so the cluster does own four of the top six stations in the 25-54 cell -- a still amazing feat. CITADEL sees Hot AC WPLJ rise to 7th place, it's best showing since July, tying them with EMMIS Urban AC WRKS. Speaking of WRKS, they moved past INNER CITY format rival WBLS, which dips from 7th in OCTOBER to 9th in NOVEMBER -- putting them in a tie with CBS Classic Hits WCBS-FM. EMMIS Rhythmic WQHT (HOT 97) inches up from 12th to 11th, moving ahead of CLEAR CHANNEL Urban rival WWPR (POWER 105) - which slides from 10th to 12th. CBS AC WWFS (FRESH) is 13th. SBS Spanish Contemporary WPAT is 14th. The next three are CBS outlets with Sports WFAN-A 15th, News WCBS-A 16th, and Rock WXRK 17th. WCBS-A saw a slight rise in share, but the NOVEMBER numbers were actually lower than some earlier in the year. CITADEL Talk WABC-A held in 19th, with WNYC RADIO non-commercial News/Talk WNYC-F rounding out the top 20. Other stations of note: EMMIS Triple A WRXP was 22nd and NEW YORK TIMES Classical WQXR 23rd.
18-49: Z100 wins here by a landslide, beating 2nd place WSKQ by 47%. There's a tie for 3rd place between WLTW and HOT 97, the latter rising from 5th. HOT moves past POWER 105, which dips from 3rd to 5th. WPLJ rises from 9th to 6th, with WKTU now 7th. WINS finishes 8th (steady from OCTOBER), with WAXQ and WRKS tied for 9th. WBLS and WCBS-F are both off one spot to 11th and 12th respectively. WPAT-F, WWFS, WXRK, WFAN-A, UNIVISION Tropical WCAA, WCBS-A, WABC-A, and ESPN Sports WEPN-A round out the top 20.
18-34: Z100 scores another easy victory -- and lands its best share yet in currency -- closing in on an unheard of 12 share. HOT 97, POWER 105, and WSKQ remain 2nd through 4th respectively again this month. WKTU moves back into the top 5, just ahead of sister WLTW - with CLEAR CHANNEL holding four of the top six here as well. WBLS and WPLJ tie for 7th, while WCBS-FM, WRKS, and WXRK tie for 9th.
Los Angeles: KIIS Remains On Top But KLAX Continues Climb; Spanish-Language Stations Solid
CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 KIIS remained the #1 station among adults 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54 - although SBS Regional Mexican KLAX continues its climb forcing a tie with KIIS in the 25-54 cell. CBS Alternative KROQ and CLEAR CHANNEL format rival KYSR both saw sharp growth, and UNIVISION continues to see an upward trend for Spanish Adult Hits KRCD (RECUERDO) while Spanish-language stations had several of the top positions in key demos.
25-54: KIIS was flat in share and tied for the top spot with KLAX, which is up a share since August. KLAX is being fueled by afternoon star RICARDO "EL MANDRIL" SANCHEZ. As a matter of fact, SANCHEZ beats his next closest competitor by 35% in PM drive. UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary KLVE slips to 3rd. KROQ rebounds from a soft OCTOBER and moves back to 4th place (up from 8th in OCTOBER). UNIVISION Regional Mexican KSCA holds in 5th. Making a steady climb is KRCD, which has moved from 11th in AUGUST to 9th in SEPTEMBER, 7th in OCTOBER, and now 6th in NOVEMBER. It also puts four Spanish-language stations among the top six. CLEAR CHANNEL AC KOST and CBS Classic Hits KRTH tie for 7th, with KRTH falling all the way from 3rd in OCTOBER (a number that now appears abnormally high). LIBERMAN Regional Mexican KBUE rises from 11th to 9th, with CBS Adult Hits KCBS-F (JACK-FM) sliding back to 10th. JACK has been in a steady decline since AUGUST, when it ranked 2th. It has gone from 2nd to 6th to 8th to 10th over four months. CLEAR CHANNEL Hot AC KBIG moves from 12th to 11th. CITADEL Classic Rock KLOS slides from 8th to 12th, and has dropped from a peak of 7th in August. With fires and the election to talk about, it was surprising to see CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFI-A only move up from 14th to 13th place in NOVEMBER, and its shares were flat. KFI tied with EMMIS Rhythmic KPWR, CBS Smooth AC KTWV, and CLEAR CHANNEL Alternative KYSR, which actually had its best month yet, rising from 21st in OCTOBER. CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic AC KHHT is 17th. ENTRAVISION Spanish Adult Hits KLYY is 18th. A better month for CBS FM Talk KLSX, which moves from 23rd to 19th, tying them with SBS Latin Urban KXOL. Also of note: CBS News outlets KNX-A and KFWB-A only grew 0.2 shares combined from OCTOBER, so, again, the busy news month didn't really move the needle.
18-49: KIIS remains a solid #1 here - but KLAX gained some major ground and has grown 25% in share since August. KROQ rebounds to 3rd in NOVEMBER after an off OCTOBER (where they slid all the way to 7th). UNIVISION grabs the next three spots with KLVE 4th, KSCA 5th, and KRCD 6th. For UNIVISION to have three of the top six stations in such a competitive market like LOS ANGELES 18-49 is amazing. KBUE rises from 10th to 7th. Hispanic broadcasters should take note that Spanish-language stations owned five of the top seven positions among adults 18-49 in L.A. in NOVEMBER. KBIG rises from 10th to 8th, tying it with sister KOST and KPWR. KCBS-F slides out of the top 10, moving to 11th place. It was as high as 3rd in AUGUST. After a spike in OCTOBER, KRTH returned to more normal levels come NOVEMBER and ranks 12th (it was 15th in AUGUST and 14th in SEPTEMBER before rising to 5th in OCTOBER). KRTH ties with KYSR, which vaults all the way from 18th. KXOL is steady in 14th place. KLYY leaps from 19th to 15th, KHHT from 17th to 16th. KLOS and KTWV tie for 17th. KSSE also returns to normal levels. They were 19th in August and SEPTEMBER, rose to 13th in OCTOBER, but returned to 19th for NOVEMBER. KFI-A rounds out the top 20.
18-34: KIIS remains on top in this cell - but lost nearly a share. KLAX scores their best numbers yet in this cell and rises from 5th to 2nd. KPWR slides back from 2nd to 3rd but holds share. KROQ dips from 3rd to 4th, but actually sees a growth of nearly a half share. KSCA climbs from 8th to 5th, as KLVE dips from 3rd to 6th. KBUE and KXOL tie for 7th, while KRCD and KBIG round out the top 10.
Other L.A. News: It's still a challenge for BONNEVILLE AAA KSWD (THE SOUND). KSWD has gone from 18th in AUGUST to 29th in NOVEMBER with adults 18-34. It's down from 26th to 30th 18-49 (and off 43% in share), and 27th to 32nd 25-54 with an identical 43% drop.
Chicago: V103 Grabs 25-54 Crown; Spanish-Language Shares Grow
A change at the top of the 25-54 rankers in CHICAGO, along with continued growth for Spanish-language outlets highlight NOVEMBER in the WINDY CITY.
25-54: CLEAR CHANNEL Urban AC WVAZ (V103) ascends to the top spot in the coveted 25-54 demographic. V103 vaults from 5th place in OCTOBER, knocking BONNEVILLE Classic Rock WDRV (THE DRIVE) to #2 by a tenth. UNIVISION Regional Mexican WOJO remains #3 but grows in share (up 41% since July). The election didn't necessarily drive a big jump for CBS News WBBM-AM in NOVEMBER (it had a huge OCTOBER), but the station was still a solid 4th (and up 50% from July). BONNEVILLE Hot AC WTMX holds down 5th. SBS Regional Mexican WLEY surges from 9th to 6th - achieving their highest ratings to date. CBS Country WUSN retains its 7th place ranking, just ahead of CITADEL Classic Hits WLS-F, which finishes 8th. EMMIS Rock WLUP slides from 6th to 9th, with a tie for 10th between CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WGCI and CITADEL Talk WLS-AM. Both of those stations were tied for 14th in OCTOBER. Four of CHICAGO's top ten stations were either African American or Hispanic targeted 25-54. The hotly contested AC battle remains just that with CLEAR CHANNEL's WLIT remaining 12th, while CBS outlet WCFS (FRESH) and BONNEVILLE's WILV (LOVE-FM) tied for 14th. In the middle of that was CBS AAA WXRT, which was off for the fourth time in five months. WXRT is down 28% since July. CHICAGO PUBLIC RADIO noncommercial News-Talk WBEZ surges from 23rd in OCTOBER to 16th in NOVEMBER, a definite benefactor of the election. They are tied with CBS Adult Hits WJMK (JACK-FM) and UNIVISION Spanish Oldies WPPN (RECUERDO). CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WKSC and ESPN Sports WMVP-A round out the top 20. Taking an enormous drop of the top 20 is TRIBUNE Talk WGN-A, which slides all the way from 10th in OCTOBER (during the CUBS playoff run) to 21st in NOVEMBER.
18-49: WOJO holds the top position here and wins by a pretty healthy margin over V103, which surges from 6th in OCTOBER to 2nd in NOVEMBER. Tied for third are WTMX and WUSN. WDRV is off for a fifth straight month and now resides at #5 (down 30% from JULY). WKSC holds in 6th, tying them with WLEY (which rises from 8th in OCTOBER). WBBM-A slides from 4th to 8th. WGCI and WLUP round out the top 10. WLS-F moves from 12th to 11th, switching spots with WCFS. CBS Rhythmic WBBM-F (B96) inches up to 13th place (and achieves its best 18-49 share to date). WLIT and WPPN tie for 14th. WBEZ soars from 24th to 16th in this cell as well, tying them with WLS-A. WILV ties with WJMK at 18th, with JACK up from 23rd. Keep in mind that this is prior to the departure of STEVE DAHL. WMVP-A and WXRT tie for 20th.
18-34: WOJO is the dominant winner here, beating its closest competitor by 37%. WKSC grabs the #2 position. WGCI climbs into a 3rd place tie with WUSN. WLEY moves from 6th to 5th, swapping places with B96. WTMX slides from 6th to 7th. WVAZ rises from a tie with WPPN to 8th place, while WPPN climbs to 9th. WLS-F rounds out the top 10. Missing from action is EMMIS Alternative WKQX (Q101). The station slides to 12th 18-34, 22nd 18-49, and 25th 25-54.
