CLEVELAND radio legend BILL "SMOOCHIE" GORDON was found dead in his EUCLID apartment THURSDAY morning by the building property manager, according to the CUYAHOGA COUNTY CORONER. GORDON was 83.
GORDON took CLEVELAND radio by storm when he joined WHK AM as a deejay in 1950. He did things that had never been done before on the air. He played his guitar, he talked over records, he turned his apartment into a studio and would bring people in off the streets for interviews.
GORDON was known as " SMOOCHIE" for his signature sign-off, "Stay smoochie, you rascal," accompanied by a smooch of such gusto it could take the chrome off a bumper.
He once had three daily shows on WHK, co-hosted the two-hour daily "One O'Clock Club" with DOROTHY FULDHEIM on WEWS Channel 5 and performed nightly at Smoochie's Hideaway in SHAKER HEIGHTS. Later, his "Apartment 13" pioneered conversational phone talk on WERE AM/1300.
