On AUGUST 6th, LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY announced that it was placing its public radio station, WLIU (88.3 FM), on sale to the highest bidder. A short six weeks later, the de facto auction closed with at least two religious broadcasters bidding and a purchase proposal from PECONIC PUBLIC BROADCASTING, INC., a new, 501c3 non-profit corporation in formation. It has since been announced that LIU has accepted PECONIC’s offer of $2,425,000.
Under the new leadership, the station will maintain much of the same staff that has given this News/Information/Music station its unique perspective as it serves the eastern end of Long Island. The overriding concept will be to make it a community-owned, community managed public voice.
The deal is expected to close sometime in mid-DECEMBER and LIU has agreed to keep the station operating at full strength during the closing period.
Your music contact at the station remains BRIAN COSGROVE, who can be reached at (631) 591-7021, or at brian@wliu.org.
