One of TEXAS’ oldest dancehalls, CLUB 21 in UHLAND, TX, burned down on SUNDAY (10/24). According to news reports, when firefighters arrived at the scene they discovered a car that was burning inside the building. Owner WILLIAM ILSE says a vacant suburban was found around the backside of the building and he believes that the two cars were involved in some type of chase before the crash.
The TEXAS DEPT. OF TRANSPORTATION is investigating to find out where those cars came from and who was driving them.
CLUB 21 was built in 1883 and ILSE’s mother purchased the building in 1964. He said: "It had a lot of history behind it. KEITH WHITLEY did a video here just before he passed away. There were a lot of people who met here, got married here.”
TEXAS DANCEHALL PRESERVATION Pres. WILLIAM SPARKS said: "It's a loss for the whole state of TEXAS. What we say is there is nothing more TEXAS than a dancehall.”
